Beadmaking

ULLI EGGER | Beginners to Intermediate

Session 2 : May 21 - June 3

This is a class for beginners and those who have some experience. Students will begin by learning how to use the heat of the flame as a tool to melt and shape the glass, to control form and pattern. During the first week, students will learn and practice many of the major beadmaking techniques, starting with simple methods and continuing with more advanced ones. They will create a variety of bead shapes as well as different techniques of surface decoration including pulling and applying stringers, twisting canes, applying dots, florals, stripes, layering colour, feathering, encasing and using gold and silver metal foils. Coldworking techniques will also be introduced to create different surfaces by sandblasting, eching and engraving. And students will get to know how to make hollow beads. During the second week, students will be encouraged to focus on individual projects such as designing, developing and completing jewelry pieces. It is also imaginable to create fancy little objects, sculptures by combining self made beads with any kind of other materials and components. In addition, information on how to set up a studio, safety issues, information on glass compatibility and annealing will be given. Students are invited to bring personal objects, found objects, strange objects etc. which can be integrated in certain projects.

Ulli Egger


Ulli Egger has been working with glass for ten years and it will be her second time teaching at the Glass Furnace. She attended the College of Crafts and Design at the Glasfachschule Kramsach, Austria. She participated various wokshops on different techniques (kilncasting, fusing, stained glass, engraving, glassblowing), at Bild- Werk, Frauenau, Germany, Centro Studio Vetro, Venice and the Glass Furnace. In 2001, she got a scholarship from Pilchuck Glass School. Ulli is working in an art and craft studio in Austria and has her own studio, where she is executing commission work in architectural field and also other things.
