Off the Wall; the possibilities of glass as a sculptural element
The instructor will teach a mixed media sculptural class which will focus on combining glass with other materials to effectively express concepts, ideas or emotions in a visual format. He will emphasize the strengths of glass as a sculptural media (transparency, optical qualities, variety of possible sculpting techniques, etc.) as well as addressing ways to overcome its difficulties (natural beauty, scale limitations, cohesive connections with other materials, etc.). In the hot shop, the class will cover a variety of techniques including sand casting, basic blowing skills and mold blowing to produce components for both large scale sculptural and installation projects. Throughout the class there will be an emphasis on discussion of appropriate uses of materials, methods of fabrication and assemblage, and most importantly how effective the work is at expressing the desired message.

Ben Wright

Ben Wright holds degrees in Evolutionary Biology from Dartmouth College and Fine Arts from the Appalachian Center for Craft. For the last six years, he has been traveling, teaching, helping artists create their visions in glass and making his own unique sculpture. His travels have brought him all over the world and to such schools as Pilchuck, Penland School of Crafts, Haystack, Corning Museum of Glass, Bild-Werk Glass School in Germany and the Glass Furnace
