Goblets: Form and Function
Designing glass goblets offers opportunity for developing contemporary form and function while exploring the Venetian tradition of glassmaking. In this class students will immerse themselves in questions of function, design and technical problem solving. Each student will gain thorough and intensive experience with methods of hot construction, bit work and the garage. Class discussions and exercises will provide the foundation for developing a personal vocabulary. Students will learn through demonstrations, teamwork and daily practice. A minimum of three years glassblowing experience is required.

James Mongrain


Introduced to glass while enrolled at Moorhead State University, Jim later studied glassblowing at Massachusetts College of Art and Appalachian Center for Crafts in Tennessee. He was introduced to Artist in Resident Dale Chihuly at Pilchuck while gaffing in 1993, which began a rewarding period of travel and learning. Over the years, he has worked with such artists as Jim Dine, Kiki Smith, Jeff Koons, Robert Wilson and Walter Lieberman. In 1997, Jim opened Mongrain Glass in Mukilteo, Washington which he continues to operate today. Recognition for his accomplishments and talent include a nomination for the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award and exhibitions nationwide. www.mongrainglass.com
