Kilncasting is a relatively basic technique that allows artists to model their ideas and transform them directly into solid glass forms. This course focuses on sculpture and covers all aspects of kilncasting in detail including modelling with wax and clay, making master moulds with silicon rubber or plaster, mould making, preparing the glass, melting and annealing cycles. In addition the course will focus on 3D drawing and modelling with an emphasis on form and concept and the search for the most interesting way to express an idea. We will study the different cast glass available; the use of colour and problem solving and also there will be a chance to finish pieces through various cold working techniques. There will be regular slide shows, demonstrations and discussions over the work in order to broaden our visual dialogue and the possibilities of glass. Participants are advised to bring their drawings, any objects of inspiration and slides or images of their own work. This course is suitable for sculpture or installation work and is open to artists with little or no glass background.
