Glass in the 4th Dimension
The unique properties of glass provide the sculptor with opportunities to create cast glass sculptures that are beyond 3 dimensional. Working sculpturally, students will learn to utilize the unique properties of glass to integrate the interior, traditionally hidden, space within with the exterior form and surface of the sculpture to create a narrative universe. This class will cover the important concepts and processes necessary to successfully complete your glass casting projects. During two weeks workshop each students will create 2 - 3 projects

Techniques covered:
o Creating plaster investment molds: open molds, closed molds and multiple part molds
o Selecting the right mold mix for the project
o Lost wax techniques for cast glass
o RTV flexible molds
o Creating pre-made inclusions - torch, fused, metals, pate de - verre, paints, and more
o 3 dimensional cast glass inclusions
o Layering interior imagery
o Glass options: billet, patties, frits
o Packing molds
o Casting thick forms in glass
o Kiln set up and firing theory and schedules
o Finishing / cold working

Linda Ethier


Since founding Ethier Glass Studio in 1969 Linda Ethier has become known for her pioneering, innovative work with fused and kilncast glass. Her evocative works deal with themes of relationship and transition/transformation. She successfully balances her career as an exhibiting artist with inventive, site specific glass works for public spaces and has created numerous public art commissions.
In the past 25 years Linda has maintained a regular teaching schedule with classes and workshops in the US and Europe including: Bullseye Glass/Pacific NW College of Art, Portland,OR, 2004 GAS conference, New Orleans, Creative Glass, Switzerland, Vetroricerca & Modern, Balzano, Italy, Glass Forum, Averoy, Norway, Glass Design, Budapest, Hungary, Vitrum Studio, Beltsville, MD, Helios Glass, Austin TX, and at Ethier Glass Studio in Portland, Oregon
