Turkish Glass Artist Feleksan Onar at New Glass Art Program
Turkish Glass Artist Feleksan onar will have her exhibition of "Through a Hole" at New Glass Art & Photography, Berlin from October 4 - November 29. Primarily, she started off in a private studio and later received her formal education at The Glass Furnace in Istanbul. Felesan Onar started her own atelier, Fy-Shan Glass Studio, in 2003 in Kemerburgaz, Istanbul, and has since become one of the pioneering studio glass artists in Turkey. One week enameling class by Mary Chuduk began on Sunday, September 27. An exciting enameling experience are awaiting participants where they will learn basic enameling techniques and how to enamel copper beads. All participants will have the chance of exhibiting their works on the last day of the course, on Saturday September 27. The Most Fun Session Ended5th session, in other words, the most fun session ended on September 13. It was great to see that all partcipants shared their creative works with other participants and their families after the certificate ceremony. Glass artists and participants of glassblowing, lampworking and mosaic classes enjoyed their time at the school during classes, night activities and city tours. On the last day, they were pleased to go back home with their works they did during the workshops.

Two Weeks Fusing Class EndedTwo weeks fusing class by Mark Ditzler ended by an exhibition on August 23. Participants began with cutting, planning and assembly of fused and slumped pieces and then moved quickly to more advanced design skills. During two weeks, participants from Israel, Poland, India and Turkey made new friendships and visited Istanbul and great historical places. On the last day of the class, they had the chance to share their work with their families and visitors at the exhibition.
Extraordinary Olympic Games of VodafoneVodafone Back Office was at The Glass Furnace on last Saturday to join extraordinary olympic games organized by Triton Organization (www.tritonorganizasyon.com). Fun olympic games included canyon path, spider net, trolley, hulahoop, flag pole, sack competition and navigation. All the partcipants enjoyed their breakfast and lunch by Riva river and total 10 groups raced against each other. The champion of the olympic games was group 9 and they left the campus at the end of such active day. Two Weeks Beadmaking Class Ended
The beadmaking class by Julie Anne Denton ended on August 16. All the participants not only enjoyed making their own glass beads but made new and fun friendships. They all enjoyed all the time together both in the studios and at other activities including Riva tour, Bosphorus boat tour at Ortaköy and shopping in Istanbul. At the end of the two weeks, they had the chance of exhibiting their works on campus.
The Session III was fun!
The Glass Furnace hosted a very fun group between July 20 - August 2. The group enjoyed themselves during and after classes of either glassblowing and sandcasting and metal. Students from The Dutch Anthilles, Netherlands, Israel discovered the cultural heritage of Istanbul as well as the glass technique they chose. All the works after the exhibition show how the session was fun and full of nature and art.
The Glass Mirror Design by Yasemin Sayinsoy
Yasemin Sayinsoy, as one of the founders of 'Camekan' brand and students of The Glass Furnace, made a design of glass mirror for glassblowing project of 2007. 120 cm round "Self Portrait with Multiples" design, displays how successful women are in glassblowing and how unique objects they can create. The Glass Furnace has the pleasure of hosting students from Israel during two week workshops. Just like the previous years, Israelite students continue to join classes including glassblowing, fusing, kilncasting and beadmaking. It is so nice to see students again at The Glass Furnace and their friends in new classes. Just like all Israelite students, Sidor Kohen in hotcasting and metal class in session 3 aggrees that The Glass Furnace is a great school to learn glass, have frienships and live the experience of Istanbul, and adds that he will continue to be at the school in coming years to continue his passion in glass. The Glass Furnace Met Glass Friends at GAS Conference
Glass Art Society (GAS) held its annual conference at Portland between June 19 - 21. We, as The Glass Furnace, came together with all our glass friends at the Conference where international glass artists, students, glass suppliers meet every year in different locations all around the world. All the participants and glass artists stated that The Glass Furnace is a great school with all its facilities. At the school presentations, we met with glass schools all around the world and had the chance of introducing our school through our presentation. We now look forward to coming together again at the GAS Conference in 2009.
The Exhibition by Participants of Session IIThe participants of glassblowing, flameworking, fusing and kilncasting classes exhibited their works at the end of session II. The participants had two weeks of glass, nature and art, created great works and also rediscoverd the timeless city Istanbul through museum and city tours. The Glass Furnace now awaits next participants for classes by world renowned artists.
A Glass Day for Schott OrimThe employees of Schott Orim Company from Bolu and Çerkezköy factories joined the day trip organized for them. They all enjoyed meeting with glass and making their own works in fusing and beadmaking workshops and then they witnessed the birth of glass at the hotshop. Some of the employees also tried glassblowing and made their own glass vases. They were all pleased to have such a great day on campus and they already planned to come back again. 12 children of Heart Bridge project by Turkish Ministry of Education and Turkcell GSM Corporate, visited The Glass Furnace. Children from eastern Anatolia and have never been to Istanbul were fascinated by how glass rods turn to colored glass beads and masters blow glass like a baloon. They all stated that they are excited of telling about the magic of glass when they go back home. Turkcell Call Center Members Blew Glass
Call center members of Turkcell, Turkish leading GSM operator, met the magical world of glass on Saturday, June 28. Members first witnessed the birth of glass through glass whirling dervish and hot glass shows. Then each participant tried blowing glass and made their owv vases. Before leaving the green campus of the school, all members came to consensus that they should visit us to continue the passion of glass. Session I Ended by Exhibition and Sertificate CeremonyThe first session of 2008 intensive courses ended by the certificate ceremony and exhibiton on Saturday, June 21. Jelveh Jaferian, as the instructor of beadmaking class and Vladimir Klein as the instructor of coldwork class stated that they had a great session and this indicates that coming sessions of this year will be much more fun. Participants from all over Turkey and the world enjoyed great friendships and they all agreed in coming together in other sessions.
Company Retreat of YE Stock Exchange CompanyYE Stock Exchange Company employees were at the campus on June 14 for their retreat activities. The employees first split into groups and joined activity competitions such as pipe-water activity, catapult activity. The most exciting activity was the raft actvity. Eaxh group made a raft using plastic pipes and then used to cross the Riva River. Each group had a captain and took other members to the other side of the river. The group that made the raft first and crossed the river first was the winner of the day. Groups also watched a demonstration at the hotshop and visited showrooms. YE Stock Exchange Company left The Glass Furnace after having such fun day. Participants Gained Energy by Qi Gong
The Glass Furnace participiants now joined a new activity. The Chineese traditional cultivation exercise for health and energy maintenance purposes 'Qi Gong' was done by participants of session I. Beadmaking participant Enis Diren used to make this exercise for 2 years and this time he had participants get invoved in it. It took 30 minutes and all participants enjoyed gaining energy for their classes. Children Love Glass
The Glass Furnace enjoys hosting students, children, schools to introduce the birth of glass. The students first watch the beadmaking glass demonstration and see how colored glass rods turn to glass beads. They then visit the hotshop and watch how masters blow the glass like a baloon and shape it. Students also join the fusing workshop and create their own designs as a plate or panel. The Glass Furnace invites young glass lovers to introduce this magical material during the summer season. Mass Art Group with James McLeod at The Glass FurnaceThe Glass Furnace hosted James McLeod and 17 students from Massachusetts College of Art from May 26 to June 7 for a dynamic program including hot glass studio workshops and Istanbul city trips. At The Glass Furnace, they spent time in the hot glass studio collaborating with some of Turkey's most accomplished glass masters and engaged in learning, applying, and experimenting with various hot and cold glass techniques. As for their time in Istanbul, they spent visiting artists’ studios, museums, historical sites as well as immersing themselves in the life that makes Istanbul one of the most vibrant cities on Earth. At the end of the class, James McLeod and all his students agreed that their two week program had been the best glass and Istanbul experience of ever!
THE GLASS HAS NEVER BEEN SUCH MAGICALBetween May 19-23, we all not only witnessed the glass art of Lino Tagliapietra but all rediscovered the magnificience of glass during five days. Lino Tagliapietra, during his five days demosntrations, underlined that the glass has no limit as far as cretaivity concerns. All audience including glass artists from all over the world, glass students, college students and glass lovers moved one step over their imagination in glass. Tagliapietra stated that the facilities are great and The Glass Furnace is the best glass school in this region.

The Tempo Tour Group Met with Glass
Participants of Tempo Tur Group visited The Glass Furnace to meet this incredible material. All participants enjoyed the birth of glass in the hotshop besides the glass whirling dervish demonstration. They also joined the interviews and expressed their impressions about the school at the TV program of This is The Weekend by Ozlem Gurses on Haberturk News Channel. We hosted the founder and owner of The Dutch Museum for Glass and Glasstechniques , Cees van Olst from PUM Netherlands Senior Executives on our campus between March 2-10. As a member of PUM, Cees van Olst stayed voluntarily making interviews with departments and studios and giving advices on improving our conditions. Olst shared his previous experiences and informed on the establishment process of Glass Museum. During his stay, he also worked at the hotshop and lampworking studio and donated his work to the school. We all appreciate his advices for improving our conditions and enjoyed hosting him. We now look forward to seeing him at the school in October. We hosted The Culture Committee of TURSAB
We hosted members of TURSAB (Association of Turkish Travel Agencies) Culture Committee on March 21 and therefore had the chance of introducing our school and activities in details. After we made presentations of hotshop, beadmaking and fusing studios, we once more underlined that The Glass Furnace is a great alternative for cultural trips. Before leaving the school all members came to consensus that The Glass Furnace is a unique place full of glass in Turkey. Learn Glass in an International Environment!

Alarko Holding Istikbal Club spent a day full of glass at The Glass Furnace on Sunday, January 20. The members of the club in other words employees of Turkey's leading holding, firstly joined beadmaking and fusing workshops and made their own glass beads and panels/plates. They watched how the glass is shaped in hands of our masters and then they tried glassblowing: they blew their own vases at the hotshop! At the end of the day they all enjoyed working with glass and they were looking forward to coming again. The Unique Object of The Glass Furnace: The Whirling Glass Dervishes
The Glass Furnace since 2003 has been dedicated to unite the philosophy of Mevlana with the transparency feature of glass through the whirling glass dervishes designed by American glass artist James Minson. The great interest by artists, glass lovers and leading firms, prove how unique this glass object is. The Glass Furnace invites everyone to see the magical dance of the whirling glass dervishes in fire and how Mevlana’s philosophy exposes. The whirling glass dervishes are under the legal protection of Turkish Patent Institution. Evil Eye Bead Making Tradition at The Glass Furnace
Traditional Evil Eye Furnace was opened on November 21, 2007 by Beykoz Lieutenant Aydın Ergün and Beykoz Mayor Muharrem Ergul. The tradition now proceeds at The Glass Furnace along with İzmir Gorece and Bead Village (Kurudere). At the Traditional Evil Eye Furnace established by valuable contributions of Altan Sungar, the bead master Ibrahim Yildirim will give one week intensive course on traditional evil eye beadmaking. Beadmaking artist Julie Anne Denton wrote about her expressions on her teaching experience at The Glass Furnace on GBUK Newsletter. July 2007 will be my fourth year of teaching at The Glass Furnace. (Cam Ocagi) I teach a beadmaking/sculptural course there, as a rule. The Turkish ladies and gents cannot get enough of beads, and it is also my job to teach the other skills associated with flameworking such as sculpture off the mandrel, blown forms, filigree vessels etc... The flameworking studio (Boncuk) boasts twelve work stations, a plentiful supply of effetre/clear borosilicate and a limited amount of Northstar colour. In the summer I generally have a multicultural class filled with half Turkish, Israeli, South Africans, Brits, Austrians etc… and in the latter part of the year the class (which is always full) has about three quarter Turkish....Please click to read her article. Dale Chihuly, one of the world's leading glass artists and founders of Pilchuck Glass School visited The Glass Furnace on June 24, 2006 and participated in the cocktail party held on behalf of him. Before the cocktail party, Dale Chihuly came together with Beykoz Mayor Muharrem Ergul and masters/artists and students from session 3 of The Glass Furnace. He presented a slide show of his work and installations in all over the world to all guests. Old News:
